Swaraj tractors were first developed at the Punjab Agricultural University with support from the CSIR, and production began at a factory in Chandigarh. The design philosophy was straightforward: build a tractor specifically suited to Indian soil conditions, Indian operator requirements, and Indian maintenance capabilities.

The Swaraj 735 and 855 became the backbone of that philosophy. Simple transmissions, accessible engine components, good ground clearance for paddy work. The 963 and 969 pushed into higher horsepower territory. Mahindra acquired Swaraj Engines in 2007 and the full Swaraj brand in subsequent years, continuing production and expanding the range with models like the Swaraj 744 XT and the 8100.
