The Standard Motor Company occupies a specific and important corner of tractor parts history. Based in Coventry, England, Standard supplied both the manufacturing facility and the engine for some of the most significant tractors ever built. The company's Banner Lane factory produced Ferguson TE20 tractors from 1946 onwards, and when the FE35 arrived in 1956, the Standard 23C engine went with it.
For anyone maintaining a Ferguson FE35 or an early Massey Ferguson 35 powered by the Standard 23C diesel, sourcing quality engine parts requires specific knowledge of this less-common engine family. Aurexa Global carries the key components for Standard Motor Co tractor engines - correctly identified and cross-referenced to give you confidence in what you are ordering.
Standard Motor Co and the Ferguson Connection
Harry Ferguson needed a manufacturing partner when he set up tractor production after his arrangement with Ford ended. Standard Motor Company's Sir John Black offered both the factory and a co-investment in the venture. Banner Lane became one of the most productive tractor factories in Britain, turning out TE20s in significant numbers from 1946 through to the FE35 era.
The Standard 23C was developed specifically for the FE35. It was a four-cylinder overhead valve diesel - simple, torquey, and well-matched to the tractor's working requirements. The petrol and TVO versions of the FE35 used a Standard petrol engine. When Massey-Harris merged with Ferguson in 1953 and the resulting company eventually phased out the Standard arrangement in favour of Perkins engines, production of the 23C unit ceased. But the tractors built with it are still running - and parts are still needed.

Standard 23C parts are less commonly stocked than Perkins equivalents, but the engines are mechanically sound and worth maintaining properly. When ordering, specify whether your tractor has the diesel, petrol, or TVO version of the 23C - and if possible, confirm the engine serial number. This helps us supply the correct components, particularly for pistons and rings where specification differences matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Standard 23C the same as the Perkins 23C?
No. Both engines share the same displacement designation but are different units. The Perkins 23C diesel was used in later FE35 production and the early Massey Ferguson 35. The Standard 23C was used in earlier FE35 production. They are not interchangeable in internal components. Always confirm which engine is fitted before ordering.
Are these genuine Standard Motor Co parts?
No. Quality aftermarket components referenced against original part numbers and manufactured to OEM-equivalent standards.
Do you export Standard Motor Co tractor parts?
Yes. We ship worldwide with full documentation.
